Primary responsibility for developing a technical solution proposal for a business problem, facilitating a “build vs. buy” decision for technologies to implement the solution, and providing architecture guidelines for solution development (e.g. design of integrations, choice of programming languages, selection of middleware technologies, etc.) in accordance with company enterprise architecture direction. Works closely with developers, LIMS Analysts, business analysts, project managers and other architects in the strategic planning and delivery of scientific applications for clients across a diverse portfolio of scientific business areas.

What You’ll Do

  • Coordinate with the client’s R&D-IT BRMs and business analysts to understand the business problems described in scope, and provide input and guidance in solution evaluation and selection;
  • Develop a detailed understanding of the portfolio of technical solutions available in R&D-IT, know when to apply and/or extend existing technology to satisfy new business needs;
  • Research technologies and approaches critical to the architecture of scientific technology solutions (across commercial, academic, and industry peer domain), and review design patterns that might be useful to the architecture of technical solutions;
  • Produce detailed analysis and staffing plans to implement the solutions identified for each of the projects/requests identified in scope for this work order;
  • Organize solution development efforts (custom and/or COTS), responsible for the vision that underlies the solution and the execution of that vision into the solution;
  • Motivate and guide solution developers (internal and external, custom & COTS); obtain buy-in to the architecture, and help the teams see how the pieces will fit together at a high level;
  • Effectively communicate proposed architectures to both technical and scientific business leadership.


  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a similar discipline;
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, building, and supporting a large heterogeneous portfolio of scientific enterprise applications;
  • Hands-on scientific application architecture experience leading, inspiring and designing large scale, high availability software solutions;
  • Strong background in scientific software systems, knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within laboratories and at least 5+ years of laboratory domain experience in drug discovery, clinical development or commercial manufacture process environment strongly preferred;
  • Familiar with commercial LIMS, ELN, image analysis, data visualization, and/or SDMS scientific software;
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills;
  • Prior work experience that demonstrates innovative application of scientific architecture, effective analytical thinking, and attention to detail;
  • Capable of translating and presenting technical architecture concepts into practical business terms in both small and large group settings;
  • Ability to interpret relevant data and information.
